Lebanon Pioneer Cemetery Workshop

   Warren County Genealogical Society

The workshop will empower participants providing them with the tools they will need to document, preserve and restore cemeteries and will demonstrate in step-by-step fashion how to preserve and restore a cemetery. Restoration techniques are approached with recommendations as to what lay people should and should not undertake.

The workshop will be conducted by the Graveyard Groomer, “Walt” & Micky Walters, preeminent graveyard restoration professionals from Connersville, IN, with over fifteen years experience and well-over 10,000 repaired stones to their credit.

Those who have attended Walt & Micki Walters’ previous workshops were inspired to sponsor Mr. Walters, locally, to provide highly experienced, professional cemetery restoration advice and training.

        • If you are responsible for cemetery maintenance or oversight, you should attend this workshop!

        • If you are interested in preserving our consecrated cemeteries maintained or restored, and

passing on the knowledge of proper restoration you should attend this workshop!

        • If you are a Scout or Scout leader) interested in a cemetery project for a merit badge.

Mr. Walters’ team is trained in the best practices and principles of gravestone conservation and cemetery restoration. He has attended conferences and classes conducted by the Association for Gravestone Studies in Greenfield, MA. This workshop includes extensive, detailed handouts that provide a guide in the right and wrong ways to approach preservation and conservation.

In the workshops you will learn the basics of gravestone repair and preservation, such as properly cleaning grave markers, leveling stones, building new bases and repairing broken stones. During the workshop and under the supervision of Mr. Walters and his team, participants will have the opportunity to work on actual grave markers.

The picture to the left shows how RoundUp has killed all the grass, but a healthy turf is necessary to hold the stones upright. RoundUp bad!

This workshop is presented in cooperation with the City of Lebanon, Sonny Redmon, Parks Director, Darrell Owens, Public Works Director, and Scott Brunka, City Manager.
